Ghana Esports Federation Engages Sports Minister to Drive Esports Development

In a significant step toward advancing esports in Ghana, the Ghana Esports Federation held productive discussions with Honourable Kofi Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation. The meeting, held at the Minister’s office, focused on the introduction, promotion, and development of esports in Ghana and beyond.

Minister’s Commitment to Esports Growth

Hon. Kofi Adams warmly welcomed the federation’s executives and reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting all sporting disciplines in the country. He emphasized that the Ministry does not discriminate against any sport and is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and growth across the board.

“The world is moving toward electronic participation in sports, and Ghana cannot afford to be left behind,” Hon. Adams stated. He expressed his determination to ensure the growth and sustainability of esports in Ghana, highlighting its potential to engage the youth and create new opportunities.

Unlocking Opportunities in the Sports Ecosystem

Hon. Adams underscored the importance of positioning esports to benefit from the vast opportunities within the global sports ecosystem. He revealed that research indicates over $1 trillion is available for sports development worldwide and expressed confidence in the federation’s ability to tap into these resources.

Additionally, the Minister announced that the Ministry is currently reviewing the Sports Act and will seek input from the esports federation and other stakeholders to ensure the updated legislation reflects the evolving landscape of sports.

Federation’s Progress and Vision

Mr. Igor Boumekpo, President of the Ghana Esports Federation, congratulated Hon. Adams on his appointment and introduced the federation’s executive members. He highlighted the federation’s achievements since its official recognition by the National Sports Authority in 2024, including organizing numerous national and international tournaments to promote esports.

Mr. Boumekpo reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to developing esports in Ghana and pledged full collaboration with the Ministry to achieve this goal. He also appealed for the Minister’s support in establishing regional esports centers across all 16 regions of Ghana.

“These centers will help diversify and grow esports across the country, providing opportunities for young Ghanaians to engage in competitive gaming and develop their skills,” Mr. Boumekpo explained.

The meeting between the Ghana Esports Federation and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation marks a pivotal moment for esports in Ghana.
